A comprehensive initial evaluation will provide the specific information needed to create the perfect physical therapy program for you! During this evaluation we will review your history, as well as test and evaluate muscle strength, flexibility and balance. We will work to assess your pain symptoms and identify the cause. This evaluation typically lasts 60-90 minutes.
Manual therapy includes a variety of “hands-on” techniques that work with the muscles and joints, helping the body to self-correct. The body is composed of many interdependent systems and parts, each of which must be in balance for overall good health. Examples of manual physical therapy techniques used include soft tissue mobilization, strain and counter strain, muscle energy, joint mobilization, manual traction and muscle/nerve re-education.
Therapeutic modalities include using advanced medical devices and equipment to enhance your physical therapy treatment plan. These modalities can significantly accelerate the healing process while reducing pain and inflammation. The devices we use are identical to those used by many Arizona professional sports teams including the Diamondbacks, Cardinals and the Coyotes.
- Shortwave Diathermy
- Electrical Stimulation
- Heat Therapy
- Cold Therapy
Electromagnetic waves are the basis of Pulsed Shortwave Diathermy. These waves create heat and increase the circulation within the body’s tissues. Pain and inflammation can be significantly reduced. Joint stiffness and muscles spasms can be alleviated. The device uses a large applicator head (or drum). This treatment is effective for soft tissue injuries, arthritis and wounds. We actually use the identical devices as many Arizona professional sports teams including Diamondbacks, Cardinals and the Coyotes.
Many conditions can benefit from the use of Electrical Stimulation therapy. Electrical stimulation equipment is used to create muscle contractions. Gentle electrical currents are transmitted through electrode pads. These pads are placed at or nearby the area to be treated. One of the great benefits of electrical stimulation is the release of pain-relieving bio-chemicals that are produced naturally by the body.
Ultrasound therapy utilizes high frequency sound waves that are beyond the range of human hearing. These sound waves produce a vibration, creating a heating effect when applied to muscles, tendons and soft tissues. Benefits of this therapy include pain relief, reduced inflammation, control of muscle spasms, and increased blood flow to the area.
Heat therapy, primarily provided by moist hot packs can be very beneficial for some conditions. Typically, the hot packs are wrapped in several layers and applied directly to the treatment area. Tight muscles and tissues often relax with heat. Muscle tension or spasms decrease, providing pain relief. Blood vessels are also dilated which increases circulation to the area.
Ice plays a significant role in acute injury treatment. Ice massage and ice packs can help in a number of ways. The cold temperature causes the blood vessels to constrict. Inflammation and swelling decrease and pain is reduced or eliminated.
A key factor in achieving a complete and permanent recovery is the training and strengthening of the muscles around the problem area. Initially, simple exercises will be given based on your comfort level. As you progress, additional exercises will increase your strength and decrease your pain. Exercises may be included as part of your office visit, provided in our in-office gym. You will also be given a home exercise plan. Following your home program is an essential part of your success.
As you complete your physical therapy program, our goal is to provide you with the knowledge, habits and exercises required for you to be independent and return to your former activities.
We invite all of our patients to return for a free 30-day follow up visit. We will personally assess your progress, answer any questions you may have and help ensure that your recovery is complete.
