Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that causes uncomfortable feelings or sensations in the legs – creating the urge to constantly move the legs to relieve these feelings.
Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome widely vary. They can range from mild to severe, and can occur on a regular basis or occasionally. Those who experience this syndrome describe it in many different ways. “Pins and needles”, “creepy, crawly”, “itchiness” are all common descriptions. In most cases the symptoms occur in the evening and during the night – improving in the morning. Unfortunately, this syndrome can have a tremendous impact on the ability to get a good night’s sleep, and can significantly impact the health and well-being of those affected.
Although the cause is not always known, several factors seem to be associated with this condition. Some of these factors are:
- Genetic pre-disposition
- Chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s and diabetes
- Kidney failure
- Medication side effects
Physical therapy can be helpful in the treatment of RLS. Recommendations for stretches or mild exercise may be given. A specialize neuro-muscular treatment called “Myokinesthetics” has also been successful in eliminating symptoms.
